Monsoon Mermaids or cacti mermaids

Endemic to southern Arizona - Endangered

These mysterious ladies only venture out during the heavy Monsoon rains. During the rest of the year they sleep buried deep beneath the sands of the washes.

They are fast and agile swimmers, staying just beneath the surface of the rushing water. If you watch carefully and are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of one.

These mermaids are very colorful and come in many different color patterns.

They protect  themselves from predators or any person that tries to catch them with very sharp thorns on their scales. Very similar defense as the prickly pear cactus. They are sometimes referred to as Prickly Merms as well.

These mermaids are hand painted on wood. They are also varnished for protection. The lime green mermaid is 9" and the purple and tan are 18" in length.
